The founder of scouting once said that scouting is game with a purpose.  In other words, a way for kids to learn stuff they need to know while having fun doing it.  Be prepared is our motto, and you never know when the skills and training you get in scouting can come in handy to help someone in need.  Case in point, a New Jersey scout troop on a hike came across a lady with a broken ankle by the side of the trail.  They splinted her up, made a stretcher from fallen tree limbs (just they way they show it in the handbook) then carried her out of the woods.

Turned out the kids didn't know it, but the lady was Ann Curry, NBC news anchor woman.  Read the whole story here.  It will put a smile on your face.  True, an ankle is nothing compared to the true lifesaving and first aid methods a troop in Sioux Falls South Dakota had to use several years ago following a tornado, but it just goes to show how important it is that boys learn these kinds of skills.  You never know when you might be called on to help someone in need and no other youth organization teaches them the way the Scouts do.
